Ensign Magnus Daire

Name Magnus Daire

Position Quartermaster

Rank Ensign

Character Information

Gender Male
Species Unknown (Alpha Doradus IV - Freecloud)
Age 22

Physical Appearance

Height 5'9"
Weight 146 pounds
Hair Color Brown with Gold Highlights
Eye Color Hazel
Physical Description At 22, Magnus is sometimes mistaken for being a teenager; there is a sort of perpetual youthfulness about him. He is slender, with a low BMI, and an air of awkwardness about him whenever he's near a workout room. While no athlete, he is lithe, supple, and possesses a physical agility that's reminiscent of a gymnast or a dancer. He dresses in muted colors so that nothing about him grabs attention. In a group, he's easily overlooked, observer more than participant, and yet, if you happen to notice him, you'll see a sharply perceptive individual who is very aware of his surroundings. He seldom speaks and nearly always has a PADD in hand.

Physiology
> Weakened immune system
> Habitually under weight/extremely fast metabolism
> Pattern of scarring on his back indicative of abuse
> Highly sensitive taste buds/discerning palate - so highly spiced foods are difficult for him to tolerate
> Excellent night vision. Larger anterior chamber and lens as well as a wider pupil, meaning eyesight is six times better than human average in extremely dark environments. Broader elliptical pupils that appear round when dilated in darkness but elliptical in bright areas. His retinas have mostly rod receptors, which are sensitive to low light levels and movement. Cone receptors help him distinguish up to six million different colors; however, these cone receptors are primarily intended to enhance vision, causing him to see color in higher saturation in brightly lit areas. Has a mirror-like structure at the back of the eye that reflects light that has not already been absorbed back into the eye a second time to produce a brighter image causing his eyes to glow in dark environments when light is shone into his eyes.
> Nictitating membrane, which helps keep the eyes moist and removes dust from the surface
> Binocular vision - excellent depth perception and the ability to judge distances and relationships between objects to a greater degree of accuracy
> Not physically strong

Personality & Traits

General Overview Magnus is intelligent, in fact, a mathematical prodigy, who has grown up in the back alleys of Star City, Freecloud. He's a good person at heart but has always had to fend for himself and has little trust that the good times will last. He works hard, whether on duty or at his side-gig, and has an obsessive need to figure things out -- doesn't need to tell anyone when he does, just needs to know. Owing to his unique eyesight, he prefers candlelight -- surprised the heck out of him when he discovered that women thought it was romantic. While he's good at reading the room, there are some things he misses (romantic interest for one -- a woman would have to drape herself naked over his desk and at that, he'd offer her a blanket and ask her to get out of the way).
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths
> Telepathic (used subconsciously/is unaware of it)
> Mathematical prodigy weighted toward pattern recognition
> Gifted programmer who writes holodeck programs under pseudonyms (Romances as the White Raven and Mysteries as the Rook)
> Detail-oriented

Weaknesses
> Speaks Freecloud Patois and Federation Standard (languages are not his gift especially written)
> Not physically strong and has a weakened immune system
> Not one to over-share (or share really). Only four years off the street, he plays his cards close to the vest. How good he is with math, programming, and alien technology isn't something he talks about.
> Pretty much always expects the worst of people
> Can get lost in a problem he's trying to solve. Walk past a display, for example, with a code on it, and his mind starts trying to figure it out ... he'll end up sneaking back or recreating it on the holodeck. Doesn't need to tell anyone the answer but he will figure it out for himself. Needs to know.
Ambitions Has 'em but isn't going to tell anyone
Hobbies & Interests > Writes holodeck programs (Romances as The White Raven and Mysteries as The Rook)
> Likes learning new programming languages (rubbish with language but alien computers aren't a mystery to him for long

Personal History About the Planet

Freecloud, otherwise known as Alpha Doradus IV, was a Venus-sized, Class M planet orbiting the binary stars of the Alpha Doradus system. This system was located in the Iconia sector of the Beta Quadrant. The planet had a 700-day Earth year. Its climate was considerably warmer than Earth's and it had lush vegetation.

This planet had a single large continental land mass named Panterra, which occupied one face of the planet in both the northern and southern hemispheres. This supercontinent had a million mile coastline that was largely mountainous. Where it was not mountainous, there were the mouths of the major rivers and the inlets of three large lakes or seas, the Yin, the Yang, and the Perfume Sea. The interior of the supercontinent was an arid or semi-arid lowland. This super continent was surrounded by a global ocean named Panpontine. The capital city of Freecloud was Stardust City, which was the largest city on the planet.

Magnus' Childhood

He is not native to Freecloud. Course that and twenty credits will get you a small plate of something that almost resembles a meal at the worst restaurant in the Down Low but that's life in Stardust City. No one cares unless you pay them first. His early childhood is apparently a memory he could live without --- amnesia. His first memory was waking up, cold and hungry, in a house with a dead woman ... and not recently dead either -- and that set the tone for the remainder of his childhood.

He named himself after a character in a novel on the woman's nightstand and, having nothing of his own in the place, stole a few things he didn't think she'd miss and moved out. To be eight years old (or so the locals thought) and homeless, is not an easy thing and while he learned, through trial and painful error, there were many, many nights where he huddled cold and scared in whatever hole he could carve for himself.

Things he learned:
> Small, hard-to-spot, places were best for sleeping
> Always have a second (and even a third) spot in case the other(s) were found
> Everyone lies and everyone has an agenda of their own

He figured it out, over time, with a lot of sleepless nights and starvation -- yeah, that was a thing for a long while. He worked out a system of odd jobs. Not everyone could pay in cash but they paid in other things -- food, education, laundry, and the like.
