Personality & Traits
| General Overview | Declan is generally resourceful, pragmatic, and independent. He approaches problems with a sometime quirky blend of analytical precision and colonial ingenuity. He has a drier sense of humor that surfaces during tense moments in engineering. Generally open and approachable, he can be very stubborn when defending his technical decisions, especially if he believes a superior’s orders risk system integrity. | |
| Strengths & Weaknesses | +Exceptional problem-solving skills, knack for improvisation. +Calm under pressure +Colonial background allows a more empathetic connection to non-Starfleet civilians and alien crews. -Tolerant at best of bureaucracy -Can be too task driven -Slow to build true trusting relationships |

| Ambitions | Pick up a R&D lead position, or a senior slot with the Corps of Engineers. Find a place to settle down and have a couple of dogs to keep him company as he works on building new things. |
|
| Hobbies & Interests | Working on and with experimental designs. Keeping up to date on the latest tech advances. Working out to keep his agility high for fickle repairs and handle equipment. Skill and accuracy phaser competitions. |
| Personal History | Born in 2357 on Draconis IV to parents James and Renee Malcom, Declan was the younger of two boys, with his older brother Jacob born four years earlier in 2353. Draconis IV is a colony planet near Alpha Centauri, serving as a stop along Federation trade routes with shipyards and repair facilities. The family operated Malcom Fabrications, a workshop in the spaceport district locals called "The Grid." James handled fabrication tasks like building hull plates and warp coils, often servicing freighters and independent vessels which exposed Declan to a variety of non-Starfleet tech, ranging from Klingon retrofits to Ferengi aftermarket mods from recycled materials, while Renee managed the business and negotiations with clients. Jacob assisted James from a young age, and by age three, Declan joined in, learning to handle tools and perform basic repairs. He learned to jury-rig equipment with limited resources by thinking outside the box, a skill that later defined his engineering philosophy. The brothers worked together on tasks and spent time in the workshop. Their home was a prefab structure on the colony's outskirts and family meals often included discussions about clients, such as traders from different species. Education and Early Interests Declan and Jacob both attended Gridport Academy, where mornings covered standard subjects like history and sciences, and afternoons involved apprenticeships. Declan was noted to have a strong aptitude for sciences and mechanics, and followed Jacob's example in repairs and experimenting. Later in school as the boys got older, Declan did exceptionally well in sciences and maths. Focusing on fabrication, repair of techological systems, a surprise came as he learned about and developed an affinity for warp field dynamics. At age 12, he built a portable scanner from scavenged parts with Jacob's help, and entered it in a school fair where it won an award. The brothers participated in various other activities with other colony children, Declan and Jacob being the leaders for their age groups. Challenges and Turning Points In 2365 during a pirate raid, the family set up defenses around the workshop, becoming a makeshift bunker for the neighborhood, with Jacob and Declan helping James in the inital setup. In 2370, a freighter accident caused a radiation leak that affected James, leading Jacob and Declan to take on more responsibilities in the shop. As the Dominion War began in 2373, the colony saw more refugees come in, and the brothers helped with the increased need for repairs and scavenged supplies. By 2375 at age 18, Declan applied for and was accepted by Starfleet Academy, choosing to major in Starship Engineering with a focus on systems maintenance and warp field dynamics. Jacob had taken over the workshop from James, allowing the younger Declan to attend with no worries or concerns about how the family would do. Declan would go on to graduate in the top 10% of his class, though his instructors noted his tendency to favor creative, “unorthodox” solutions over by-the-book procedures due to his broad, unconventional perspective on starship design compared to the standardized systems taught by Starfleet. |
