Lieutenant JG Elen Rell

Name Elen Rell

Position Engineering Officer

Rank Lieutenant JG

Character Information

Gender Female
Species Human–Betazoid hybrid (¼ Betazoid)
Age 32

Physical Appearance

Height 5'9"
Weight 146lbs approx.
Hair Color Dark brown, nearly black
Eye Color Hazel
Physical Description Elen Rell has a strong, agile build: not bulky, but defined by the balance and physicality of someone who moves constantly, fixes things by feel, and rarely sits still unless she’s deep in thought or mid-poem. Her skin is a smooth coppery brown, and her expressive hazel eyes shift from green to gold to honey depending on the light or her mood. Despite her Betazoid blood, her eyes have retained the same colour as her father’s eyes.

Her hair is a crown of dense coils and waves, often pulled back in a loose puff or wrapped in a patterned headscarf: frequently one of her own designs. Elen wears her uniform like she was born in it but always personalises it: a knit cuff at the wrist, a slightly asymmetric tuck, a handmade charm hidden on her belt loop. Her hands are always moving, from fiddling with tools, twirling a crochet hook, or tracing lines in the air when deep in technical thought. She speaks with a warm Martian lilt and an easy laugh that can defuse tension or equally mask her unease.

Family

Father Major Davin Rell (Ret.) – Federation Ground Forces (Combat Medic)
Mother Colonel Ilyana Rell (deceased) – Federation Ground Forces
Sister(s) Kaia Rell (half-sister, b. 2380)
Other Family Step-Mother: Mira Glenn-Rell – Civilian teacher, retired comms specialist

Personality & Traits

General Overview Elen is a firefly in a bottle, or maybe just a potential plasma storm of words: brilliantly technical, emotionally intuitive, and occasionally explosive. Her ADHD adds both spark and storm to her presence: she thrives under pressure, bursts through problems with energy and insight, and can hyperfocus with startling intensity when the situation demands it. But she can also be scattered, talkative to a fault, or prone to missing protocol cues in her enthusiasm to connect or contribute.

Flirtation is her second language, but not as conquest or provocation, it’s how she connects. Her words are warm, teasing, charged with good humour. She flirts like someone offering a cup of tea: playful, inclusive, and immediately retracted if a flicker of discomfort is sensed. Her quarter-Betazoid intuition sharpens her awareness of others’ moods, and she’s almost preternaturally skilled at reading social energy. If someone shifts awkwardly or pulls back, she redirects without a beat, switching from flirty to affirming, always prioritizing respect over charm.

She jokes easily and often, but behind the grin is a thoughtful listener with a natural ease around wounded pride or shaken confidence. She’s the kind of person who’ll throw a Yeats quote into a warp manifold discussion, or knit socks for an ensign she barely knows, just because their boots looked stiff or they complained about getting cold feet at night.

Elen takes medication to manage her ADHD symptoms, not to dull her, but to help with focus and emotional regulation. It’s something she speaks about openly, especially to junior crewmembers who feel different or overwhelmed. She sees it as part of her wiring, not a flaw. “It’s just how my engine runs,” she’s said. “Sometimes it needs a tune-up, sometimes it breaks the sound barrier.”
Strengths & Weaknesses Strengths:

• Intuitive engineering; sees systems like living organisms
• Hyperfocus under pressure; thrives in chaos
• Deep emotional intelligence and empathy
• Socially magnetic; tries to make people feel safe and seen
• Physically agile and quick with tools
• Quotable, poetic, and artistically expressive
• Creative thinker; finds elegant fixes in impossible situations
• Sensitive to emotional boundaries; flirts with care, never to discomfort

Weaknesses:

• Informal to a fault; struggles with protocol and hierarchy
• Can become easily distracted or over-talkative
• Occasionally overshares or jokes inappropriately
• Struggles with bureaucracy, paperwork, and task prioritization
• Sometimes avoids personal vulnerability beneath charm
• Professional advancement slowed by behaviour outside of expectations
Ambitions Elen doesn’t aspire to command or run Engineering on a ship, she wants to build the future, literally and figuratively. She dreams of developing engineering systems that are not only technically efficient but psychologically supportive for crews. She wants to design tactile interfaces, sustainable warp modifications, and adaptive systems that "listen" to users and can be more attuned to them. One day, she'd love to teach but not from a podium. She wants to be the kind of mentor who pulls up a stool beside a junior officer mid-repair and shows them the poetry in a plasma manifold.
Hobbies & Interests Elen has a lot of hobbies and interests, but the ones that she really spend time on and commits are knitting and crocheting. It keeps her hands busy and her mind grounded. She makes gifts for crew, repairs uniforms creatively, or just adds creatively to brand new replicated uniforms, and even crochets wire insulation sleeves. She grew up on poetry and Arthurian literature and loves reading. It often means she will throw out bits of poetry in situations where things are a bit...intense.

She likes modifying her own gear and personalising repair kits; both her own and other people's. She once replicated glitter glue and decorated Engineering’s alpha shift gear. She was on Beta shift…

Lately she has thrown herself into cooking. she is enthusiastic on the holodeck but talentless when it comes to put a meal together. The replicator is the friend for anyone who ever thought they'd taste her cookies...

Personal History Elen was born on Mars in 2357, the first and only child of two dedicated Ground Forces officers, named after the sister of King Arthur of myth. Her early life was full of structure, warmth, and laughter. It stayed with her until the war took her mother when she was 17, and the family balance shifted. Even then, Elen was taught to love the world she lived in, to find beauty in motion and meaning in creation. Her father remarried some years later, and Elen formed a genuine bond with her stepmother, Mira, a no-nonsense former communications specialist turned civilian teacher.

Kaia, her younger half-sister, came along not long after, and Elen took to her instantly. She still writes her letters weekly and sends home weirdly affectionate knitted toys, usually fun bears or alien animals.

Her Betazoid ancestry (from her mother’s side) is faint, but just strong enough to make her feel others’ emotions in flickers: flashes of mood, intent, or need she calls her “vibes.” They’re not reliable, but they are deeply personal, and Elen has learned to trust them as one trusts instinct.

Diagnosed with ADHD in adolescence, Elen struggled initially with academic focus and emotional control. With support from her family and Starfleet medical advisors, she found a medication plan that works well for her — enhancing her focus without dulling her spark. It remains a daily part of her rhythm, and something she talks about openly when asked.

Elen passed the Starfleet Academy Entrance Exams in 2375 and majored in Systems Engineering. She quickly became known for explosive creativity (both in the abstract and literal sense…there was an incident on the holodeck during an exam), strong emotional rapport with her peers, and a mild disciplinary record involving verbal informality and irreverent humour. During this time she also developed strong friendships and a love-hate relationship with structure.
She graduated in 2379 and her first posting was the USS London as a junior engineer. She quickly got a reputation for being able to handle non-Federation systems, developing with the help of the computer a script that made it easier to intergrade Starfleet code into non-Federation systems. She got on well with her first Chief after weeks of back and forth banter and it was during this time that she started bringing her knitting or crocheting to her shifts…to keep her hands busy if there was nothing to do, or she needed to clear her mind.

In 2384 she was transferred to the USS Kestrel and served as a regular Engineer. The ship itself did edge of sector exploration patrols and relay station repairs, something that was always challenging because the systems they worked with on relay stations tended to be automated and antique. Elen always enjoyed doing it and found herself taking on unofficial mentorship roles, especially among the enlisted Engineers that transferred on. She didn’t even think of why she did it, she just did. It was also on the USS Kestrel that she had her first disciplinary hearing on the ship…she had made an inappropriate joke during a diplomatic tour and said “well that’s a hell of a mood”…in front of several high-ranking, tense and stressed diplomats. It did not go down well but didn’t become anything more than a note on her file.

In 2387, she was transferred to the USS Guinevere as an Engineer and was excited to get her hands on a new warp core.
