Mission:
Prologue
Location: Main Engineering
Timeline: Immediately After "The Gate Alights"
Commodore's Log: Supplemental:
We have launched Iliad into the gate, though at cost of damaging Guin. I am heading for engineering.
Elias made his way through the chaos of the Main Engineering deck. He could see the wounded being tended to by medics and nurses, Dr. Vale, Elen and the new officer, Declan standing by the large "Pool" table near the center of the massive space.
"Report!" Elias called out as he approached them.
“Over here, sir,” Cressida called from further in engineering.
She was crouching over a single body on the deck, a sheet covering it, over the face.
When the Commodore got closer, she pulled the sheet back to show the peacefully resting face of one Jalay Prinnet.
“I’m sorry, sir,” Cressida said. “She was pulled down from the control room over there.” She pointed across the engineering chamber. “One of the explosions ruptured a gas line of some kind. She cleared the room but stayed behind to get the job done. She saved lives, sir. For what it’s worth, it was painless.”
Elias closed his eyes for a moment. A hard loss. Jalay had survived the resistance, the occupation of Bajor only to die in the pursuit of science. Never an easy thing to lose crew.
“She was a good woman.” He commented before turning to look at Declan and Elen going back and forth with one another.
Declan was restraining himself from going out to do repairs, trying to bring a sense of organization to the chaos Main Engineering had become. Inbetween coordinating repair teams, among his concerns, was Elen still refusing medical treatment. At the moment the Commodore came in, Declan was in the middle of yet another attempt.
"Lieutenant Rell, I know I'm temporary, but I do outrank you. The emergency is handled, repair teams are being coordinated. The gate is stable. You need to set an example and go get those wounds treated. If you refuse this time, I will call one of the doctors over here and let one of them sedate you if needed." The words came out in an intense, cajoling tone that held a note of exhaustion, as if they had been uttered a few times already. The volume was low enough it wouldn't carry far enough for anyone not right there at the table to hear.
Elias’ ears picked up on the conversation enough. Superior Caitian hearing, though he couldn’t say the same of his eyes.
“Mr. Malcolm is right, Elen. Get yourself checked out with Doctor Vale.” He said to the young engineer in that stern father voice he sometimes used with Emery.
“Speaking of outranking, I know you’re on temporary assignment here, which based on current events we’ll need to extend.” He said to Declan.
"Understood Commodore. Wouldn't want to leave right now anyway, till this is all fixed. Want the five-credit summary, or the full 10 version?" Declan asked Elias, as he queued up the repair teams, and looked to see if Elen was finally going to cooperate on her injuries.
“Full report if you please, Mr. Malcolm.” Elias said with a command cadence, still giving Elen the dad look for her to go see Dr. Vale.
Elen made her way to Doctor Vale, not meeting her eyes as she stood there and let herself be treated.
“Come on, Elen,” Cressida said softly. “Let’s get you looked at properly. Follow me. Let’s go to sickbay.” She gently put her hands on Elen’s shoulders and guided her away from the worst of the casualties, including the deceased Ms. Jalay.
"Full report. Aye." Declan took a moment to gather his thoughts and organize the chaos they just gone through. "The initial attempt of a single point charged plasma stream caused the borg tech of the gate system there to enter a kind of controlled overload, and it started emitted exotic particles back out. Those particles further charged the plasma stream, and caused a feedback loop in our systems, which caused the main EPS to over-charge and blow."
Declan took a breath before continuing, this next part was going to hurt a bit. "The damage caused a rupture in the plasma coolant system, and the Chief attempted to evacuate the area, remaining behind to ensure it was sealed off, but taking a lethal dose. As you might remember, the coolant as a gas is deadly in large amounts, but it was quick."
"We had to purge an area of the particles, set up a second stream with the shuttles before the supercharged plasma melted them, which reduced and then stopped the particle flow. The gate completed its activation and the Borg tech is working on its own repairs. We have sensors watching. Repair crews are already replacing the blown EPS conduit, and the damaged coolant juncture." Declan finished his report with deep sign.
"How long til we're on the move?" Elias inquired as he listened to the report.
Declan looked down at his PADD before answering to ensure his information was accurate. "We can go whenever you like. Secondary conduits are in use, there's no disruption to ships' systems. Full repairs will be complete in about an hour, give or take."
"Now that we should have the gate open, that phase of the assignment is done. So I guess it's down to what's next?" Declan asked.
"If it's the same to you, Mr. Malcolm, if you're willing to take it on, I need a Department Head, and I know Elen won't take the job." Elias asked.
"Only if you're willing to extend your tour on Guin"
Declan nodded at that request. "Not like I had anything planned for after this anyway. I'll accept the offer and the extension, Sir. Getting used to the peculiarities here anyway."
The Comms chirpped shortly after.
"Bridge to Commodore McEntyre and Dr. Tyris?" The relief bridge science officer spoke.
Elias tapped a comm panel on the large pool table.
"McEntyre"
"Sir, we have return telemetry from Iliad, sirs, you're not going to believe this"
Tyris’s eyes widened. “Thav, send the feed down here,” he said, using the abbreviated name that the Andorian preferred. And besides, Thav rolled off the tongue much more than Thavaniskin ch’Vorthishira. “Engineering work station six beta please.”
“On its way,” replied the young blue-skinned Junior Grade Lieutenant.
The small screen came to life with data, running in a rapid fire column next to the visual feed. The amount of information being produced by such a compact scanning platform was astounding; the level of detail was also quite impressive. The Iliad series probes were a significant leap forward for Starfleet in terms of long-range scanning technology; they incorporated all of the latest updates, including multispatial scanning systems and triquadric algorithm based mapping. As he examined the readings, Tyris let out a long, low whistle…a tell that only Elias would recognize as him being extremely surprised.
“Based upon the probe data, the Transwarp aperture’s exit point is well beyond mapped space,” said Gil, shaking his head slightly. “And by well beyond, I mean it’s in open space in the heart of M33. The Triangulum Galaxy. Two million, eight hundred sixty three thousand, nine hundred fifty two light years from our current position.”
Elias was surprised, standing there shocked.
"What?'
