Mission:
Pilot - "The Gate"
Location: Ward Room
Timeline: 2 hours after "Engineering Report"
Elias had hardly believed what he saw from the Iliad probe's data. The gate connected to a whole new galaxy.
M33. Triangulum.
Two million, eight hundred sixty three thousand, nine hundred fifty two Lightyear distance, in an instant through the gate that was lingering in the distance from Guinevere.
Why did this bother him so much? Was it because it completely rewrites what they knew about the Borg? That they could travel not only through known space in mere instances but to other galaxies as well? Is there a gate leading to Andromeda?
He held a paw under his chin in thought, looking at the gate through the massive windows of the observation lounge as the senior staff sat around the massive wooden conference table, deep in discussion.
"Well then. What do we now do with this... incredible discovery?" Well, someone had to start up the conversation if no one else was going to - even if doing so took voicing the question that was undoubtedly on all their minds.
Drevas glanced around the table at the solemn faces of his fellow appointment holders. He knew, deep in his heart, that they were all stunned by this simply monumental discovery. Others, when they heard of it, would be too. Some amongst those others might come and try to seize the opportunity to claim the gate as theirs. He could think of a few especially standout candidates right now, in fact. Imagine if they decided to start a war over it.
What ever happened next, they'd need to be extraordinarily careful. That too he knew every person seated at the table had well in mind.
A new galaxy, talk about a chance of a lifetime. He had his boys aboard. Blez spoke up. "Forgive me, did Iliad return?" He is a security officer, he didn't know what was going on in other departments.
"What you get for missing the start of staff meetings, Major." Elias let out a chuckle before he continues, tapping the controls on the conference table to bring up the hologram of the Iliad's data.
"Iliad returned about 4 hours ago. This was the data it brought back. The terminus point for the gate ends somewhere on the outer edge of M33." Elias continued, moving to sit back at the head of the table.
"Dr. Tyris will elaborate."
Gil cleared his throat softly, a nervous tic that he had never quite been able to shake. He was presenting significant findings…something that, as a scientist, gave him a mild thrill. “Yes. As most of you present have already heard, our data from the Iliad probe is under detailed analysis. This data will be made available to all departments. Commander Lyo has agreed to hand out specific assignments, so we can get a more balanced perspective.”
Tyris paused, long enough to take a short drink from his glass of water. “What we do know,” he continued, “is that the probe entered the aperture at precisely 2325 hours yesterday. The data link would normally have been weakened by the extreme distance, but a series of amplifiers on the exit end kept the signal strong and clear. The probe ran its complete series of scans and returned through the aperture at 0630 this morning. Multiple source materials confirmed that the probe came into normal space 400 million kilometers outside of the system UFP65674-PX2172, approximately 2.864 million light years from our current location. I don’t need to mention that this is the first Borg Transwarp Gate known to exit outside the Milky Way Galaxy. Any questions so far?”
"I'm a little concerned that the Borg had a conduit to another galaxy, did Iliad scan for transwarp trails leading away from the gate? And the fact that the other end is a gate instead of just an exit aperture tells me that the Borg intended to send forces there or already have," hopefully they will not have to deal with the Borg on the other side, but it is possible. Blez was not looking forward to that day. His question had that troubled inflection to it while he spoke.
Elias nods attentively as the Major spoke before answering.
“You are correct, Major and I’ve spoken at length about this to Fleet Admiral Rand and the command council about this. They’re ordering Rear Admiral Shelby to conduct a full audit of intelligence we have at Borg R&D. However, Admiral Rand shares my opinion that we need to pursue a manned exploration of the other side. She has ordered we go through as soon as field repairs are complete.”
Counselor Montoya watched the Commodore for a moment, her eyes going briefly to Major Dralis before she tilted her head a little. "That order changes things, especially with...lack of intel. It’s a move. And how we make it will be watched by whoever is on the other side," she said, her voice devoid of any real emotion. "We need to decide what we’re representing, because there is a fine line between explorers and invaders. And we need to be ready to answer for it."
“Especially given that the Collective has been such a force for conquest and domination here,” quipped Tyris, folding his hands together nearly on the table in front of his body. “Spirits only know what havoc they wreaked in Triangulum.”
“Ms. Montoya is correct. Which is why it is imperative we put the best foot forward for whomever is on the other side. We are not conquerors, nor brigands or pirates. We are explorers first. The prime directive applies. We will not be like the Equinox’s crew.”
Elias drove that last point home. The Voyager papers were clear on that point and Kathryn Janeway’s words echoed in his mind. “No matter what, even far from home, they were Starfleet first.”
“Mr. Drevas, you will begin calibrating our defenses and phaser arrays to adapt to the Borg and Loading Transphasic Torpedoes at the first sign of Borg Cubes.
Majors Moriarty and Dralis will begin distributing our anti-Borg arms to all Ground Forces. Engineering will assist Mr. Drevas in getting ships defenses ready and the ship underway as soon as possible. XO and Science Officer will begin tuning the sensors as an early warning system, scan for Transwarp corridors and signatures along with anything else that might suggest Borg once we’re on the other side of the gate. Dr. Vale will work on the medial front with Ms. Montoya. Any questions?”
"Understood. I will also instruct my crew to initiate their last communications to their loved ones before we depart." Drevas replied softly. "I believe it will benefit them all greatly. Especially seeing the circumstances we might very well be heading into."
“Oh, that’s not morbid at all,” said Tyris under his breath.
"Aye sir," Blez acknowledged regarding his orders for anti-Borg arms.
Connie looked around the room for a moment, taking them in, before she gave a small shake of her head. No question. Although working on the medical front with the CMO would be...interesting.
“The practices associated with reversing assimilation have advanced by leaps and bounds since the de-assimilation of then-Captain Picard, Seven of Nine, and the late Lieutenant Icheb,” Cressida observed. “Still, I wouldn’t wish that horror on my worst enemy. Majors, I’d like to work with you on assimilation prevention measures before we go through.” She then looked to Connie. “Come by my office later; we’ll talk emergency planning.”
"What of the Brunali pathogen, Doctor, can it be boosted and administered should we make contact with the Borg?" Blez inquired as he focused on Cressida, he was certain Starfleet Medical would have many samples and variants to work with to give the Borg hell.
Cressida shifted uncomfortably in her seat. “Let’s hold that conversation for another time,” she said.
"As you wish," Blez nodded at Cressida before he turned to Jesse. "Major, what would you say to some anti-Borg drills? I'd love to join in." He asked of the Detachment Executive Officer.
Jesse Moriarty gave a firm nod to Blez before looking to Elias to add his voice to the recommendation. "Not only in the Ground Forces. I'd recommend ship wide drills, for every department. You can never be too prepared against the Borg...and anything else. Frankly, we have no idea what might be through that gate, Borg or otherwise. We all need to be prepared to defend ourselves in unknown territory if needs be."
"I couldn't have said it any better," Blez gave a grin, he was looking forward to see how the ground forces on the Guinevere performed.
"Ladies, Gentlemen, before we adjourn, Major Moriarty, Step Forward please." Elias had tapped the table with a rapt of his knuckles on the wood.
Moriarty's eyebrows lifted at the unexpected callout. He glanced momentarily down the table, as if it might give him some idea of what was going on. Or what he'd done wrong. He was pretty sure he couldn't have earned a dishonourable discharge in the little time he'd been onboard. If he had, it would be some kind of record. Instead of trying to do the complicated maths to work it out, he stepped up as ordered, facing the music.
Elias pulled over one of the PADDs that had been stacked near him, a small black box besides it. He stood tall, proud.
"Major, Lieutenant Colonel Llewelyn has asked for early retirement, which has been granted onto him." Elias began before he picks up the small black box on the conference table.
"Thus it is with great pride and honor that: by order of Commanding General of Ground Forces, General T'kel Ve'lak, and acting on authority of Starfleet Command and the United Federation of Planets, I Elias McEntyre, Commanding United Starship Guinevere Number 80518, do hereby promote you to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel with all rights, privileges and responsibility sown there into. You are also hereby requested and required to assume command of Ground Forces stationed aboard United Starship Guinevere, Number 80518. Signed Fleet Admiral Alice Rand, Commander in Chief of the Federation Starfleet, Countersigned Commodore Elias McEntyre, Starfleet Command."
Elias smiles as he takes off the black pip on Jesse's uniform and pins the full pip marking him as a new Lieutenant Colonel.
Jesse stared at him with wide, dark eyes as Elias fixed the pin to his collar, caught in a moment of sheer disbelief. It almost didn't feel real. Whatever he had been expecting, that hadn't even crossed his mind. Lieutenant Colonel. That was some journey from the Private he'd started as. He'd never imagined...he finally reminded himself to breathe, realising there were eyes on him. He cleared his throat, nodding to the Commodore with awe. "Thank you, Sir, I...won't let you down."
"I look forward to seeing you thrive in your new position." Elias nods with a small smile.
"Major Dralis will serve as your XO. Anything you need, make sure you request"
Blez smiled, he loved promotion ceremonies and watching how people reacted. Especially when they are so unexpected. Though when he was mentioned to become the newly promoted Lieutenant Colonel's executive officer in the detachment. Weren't Military Police supposed to be separate, Blez wondered as he watched the Commanding Officer and Jesse. Should he bring it up to them?
He decided to revel first and approached Jesse. "Well congratulations Lieutenant Colonel sir," Blez offered a hand.
Montoya gave a small smile as she looked at Moriarty. "Congratulations, Lieutenant Colonel Moriarty," she said, her voice polite, with a hint of warmth.
“Well earned, Lieutenant Colonel,” Cressida added.
Jesse wasn't used to the public compliments. He shook Blez's hand, but his features...that were more often severe or focussed...looked suspiciously close to bashful. "And I'll make sure to continue to," he assured.
"Commodore, did you assign a date and time for our departure?" Blez inquired calmly.
"As soon as final repairs and preparations are made, no more than 24-48 hours maximum." Elias replied calmly, gathering up his PADDs
"If nothing else, you're all dismissed. Yeoman with me" Elias nods before heading for the door.
